In a TikTok video, white influencer Alix Earle shared Mielle’s rosemary mint scalp and hair oil with her millions of followers, claiming she had “tremendous hair growth” after using it. The product quickly sold out online and in stores.
But loyal Black consumers have valid concerns that the brand will reformulate their products to accommodate a wider audience, which could raise prices and limit access for marginalized communities.
Moisturizes
The skin is a complex organ and it requires special care. Using the right moisturizer is key to maintaining healthy skin. Mielle’s moisturizers are gentle enough to cleanse your skin without stripping it of its natural oils. They are also formulated to hydrate your skin, making them ideal for low porosity hair and protective styles like braids and weaves.
One of Mielle’s best-selling products is their Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Oil, which is packed with 30 essential oils and nutrients. This formula helps strengthen the hair and scalp, prevent damage, smooth split ends, halt dandruff, encourage growth, moisturize and boost shine.
While many TikTok influencers are raving about this product, there have been some Black critics that have voiced concern that the continual marketing from white influencers could cause the price of the oil to increase, which would make it less affordable for some of their followers. Luckily, Mielle has responded to the criticism and assured fans that they will not change the formulation of their products.
Strengthens
If you have low porosity hair, it’s crucial to strengthen the strands from within. Mielle’s line of products is formulated with ingredients like ginger root oil, honey, and pomegranate extract that nourish your strands while maintaining their healthy pH balance.
The brand’s Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil is loaded with biotin, which helps prevent damage, boost growth, and reduce dandruff. The formula is also infused with more than 30 essential oils and extracts, including rosemary, castor, and peppermint.
Earlier this year, the Mielle brand was acquired by P&G Beauty, the company behind Shea Moisture and many other popular beauty brands. Since then, some Black consumers have been concerned that the brand may alter its products to appeal to white consumers. It’s a valid concern given that there is precedent for hair-care companies re-formulating their products to better suit white hair. Luckily, Mielle has assured its loyal customers that the company will not change the formulation of the Rosemary Mint Oil or any other products.
Invigorates
Unlike other brands that use harmful chemicals, Mielle products are free of sulfates and parabens and use natural ingredients such as honey, ginger, avocado oil and shea butter to nourish hair. They also promote sustainability with recyclable materials, local sourcing and fair trade practices.
Mielle’s Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil is designed to support length retention, smooth split ends and address dry scalp issues. It contains more than 30 essential oils and extracts. It costs $10 and is available at Amazon, Target, Sally Beauty and Walmart.
In January, Mielle was acquired by Procter & Gamble’s beauty division. This move is a major step for the company, but many Black consumers are still concerned that the company will increase prices and reformulate its best-selling products to appeal to a white audience. The same concerns were expressed when SheaMoisture was reformulated in 2015. This could be especially damaging for textured hair, since it is prone to frizz and breakage.
Hydrates
When you’re working hard to grow long and healthy hair, it’s important to have a good regimen in place. That means eating a well-balanced diet of proteins, veggies, and fruits as well as drinking enough water to keep your body hydrated.
While the brand’s Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil has become a DIY-sensation in the natural community, Mielle also offers a wide range of nourishing shampoos and conditioners that are formulated to keep your hair healthy.
For instance, the brand’s Shea Moisture line is formulated to provide a deep level of hydration for low porosity hair using ingredients like shea butter and coconut oils that penetrate the hair shaft without leaving a heavy feel. Plus, they offer a variety of styling products that are great for textured hair, such as curling custards and defining gels.
